About Patna University
Patna University was established in the year 1917 and it functioned as affiliating On January 2, 1952 it was converted into a purely teaching -cum-residential University with the territorial jurisdiction over Metropolitan Patna. It is one of the oldest Universities in the Country. In Bihar it is the first, and in the subcontinent, it is the seventh oldest University. The University buildings are located on the bank of River Ganges.
This is first university in Bihar and 7th in India. The university has given the responsibility by the government to administer examinations starting from Matriculation level to Postgraduate level. the Patna University was made a residential University.
From beginning the University has some very well known institutions both professional and non professional attached with it. It has a full-fledged Law College, Teachers’ Training College along with Engineering and Medical Colleges. At present the University has 9 Faculties, 32 PG Departments, and 11 Colleges to its credit. In 1974 the University established a Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) so as to provide education to those who cannot attend regular university classes. All the departments of the University are attached with a Departmental / Seminar Library. Besides University also has Central Library to offer best of the learning facilities. The Central Library is linked with INFLIBNET. The University also provides residential accommodation to about 50% of its Male Students and all Female Students.

Directorate of Distance Education (DDE)
The Directorate of Distance Education, Patna University was establishment in 1974 with the purpose of providing higher education through correspondence and distant learning methods to such persons, who though possessing necessary educational qualifications, were unable to join any regular college. Those persons, who are engaged in some service of business, can also get themselves admitted to the directorate and receive higher education. It is also a book for those females who have no frequent opportunities due to engagements in house hold works.
The mode of imparting instruction through Distance Education has been found useful, effective and less expensive in almost all developed countries and also in many universities in our own country. The study material (or lessons) is carefully planned and prepared by a team of efficient experienced and devoted teachers. The printed study materials are made available to the students at regular intervals. Well-planned lessons with necessary instruction, illustrative example, thought provoking exercises and test questions act both as text book and teacher to the students. After studying the lessons and recommended reading materials, the students are required to solve exercise and answer the test questions and send them to the Directorate. This type of two-way communication between teachers and the students is really an essential feature of this distant learning.

The course of study, duration of the course the examination and the degree of B.A., B.Com, (Hons.) etc. are the same as those of the students of the regular Colleges of Patna University. This is the difference between this Directorate and the regular Colleges.
These study materials are prepared according to the syllabus and serve the purpose of classroom lectures.
