M.S. in Ophthalmology is a postgraduate course in medicine that involves an advanced study of the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. Ophthalmology is the study of medical conditions relating to the eye. Ophthalmologists are doctors who specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of this organ.
The course is beneficial to give treatment based on the assumption that treating the parts of the visual system with the use of medicines, surgery, diet, and other therapies, will, therefore, treat the underlying eye problem. The curriculum includes components such as Orbital and Ocular Anatomy, Gross anatomy, Histology, Ocular Physiology, Ocular Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology in relation to Ocular Immunology.
The course also imparts opportunities for ophthalmologic research in clinical surgery settings like fine microsurgery, using the operating microscope, and intraocular surgery or vitreoretinal surgery of the eye.
Eligibility Criteria
The candidate must have MBBS degree with a minimum of 50% marks and a year of internship/work experience. Some of the very reputed universities and institutes conduct an entrance examination for admission.
