MD Microbiology or Doctor of Medicine in Microbiology is a postgraduate Microbiology course. Candidates acquire knowledge in the sub-specialties of Bacteriology including Mycobacteriology, Virology, Parasitology, Immunology, and Serology & Mycology.
What is Microbiology?
Microbiology is a branch of biological science that studies microorganisms (also known as microbes), which are microscopic unicellular or cell-cluster organisms and infectious agents. The different types of microbes studied by microbiologists include bacteria, archaea, viruses, eukaryotes, fungi, prions, protozoa and algae. These microbes can differ dramatically in terms of size and characteristics.
Microbiology is a broad discipline, and microbiologists study microbes at the level of proteins and genes (molecular biology), at the cellular level (cell biology and physiology), and at the community level (public health, ecology and epidemiology). Branches of microbiology include virology, parasitology, mycology, microbial genetics and bacteriology.
Microbiologists are people who specialize in the field of microbiology. They are scientists who study organisms and infectious agents that cannot be seen with the naked eye. They study the interactions of microorganisms with humans and other organisms that exist and affect our lives.

4. After completing MBBS degree from any of the recognized Medical colleges or Universities, one must pursue MD (Doctor of Medicine) in Microbiology.
Admission Process in MD Microbiology
Some reputed colleges and universities conduct entrance examinations for admission to Degree courses. They should have the spirit of scientific inquiry and mind, oriented to the principles of research methodology and epidemiology.
For admission in the post-graduate course, the student has to appear in Post Graduate Medical entrance which AIIMS PG, NEET PG.
Some universities also offer admission on the basis of the marks secured in MBBS programme and work experience.
Entry examination of MD/MS/Diploma, DNB (Diplomat of National Board) & CPS (College of Physicians and Surgeons) program is through a national level centralized entrance test (Combined NEET PG entrance by NBE).
Entrance Exams for MD Microbiology
List of the Entrance Exams candidates will have to take up for their admission in MD Microbiology:
AIIMS, New Delhi and other AIIMS
PGIMER, Chandigarh

CAREER & Jobs OPPORTUNITIES
They should also have a mind which is employing a range of investigative, recording and analysis techniques; preparing, interpreting, and presenting data, using statistical programs, qualitative and quantitative techniques, and spreadsheets.
A post-graduate degree in microbiology gives you the opportunity to work at science laboratories and pathology labs. If you have a PG in microbiology, you can work in microbiology-based industries like pharmacy, dairy, breweries, distilleries, enzyme, etc. and you also can pursue Ph.D. Students who complete their Ph.D. can take up teaching at universities and PG colleges. They can also take up post-doctoral research.
