The Ministry of Education is taking major steps to include artificial intelligence (AI) in the Indian education system. It has created a Centre of Excellence in AI for Education at IIT Madras. Government officials, industry leaders, teachers, and technology experts are now working together to make AI a part of daily learning for students and teachers.
Recently, the Ministry held meetings with leaders of AI startups working on education tools and also organised a two-day "Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026." These meetings brought together important groups to talk about the responsible use of AI for learning.
At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, a special session called "Ministry of Education - Pushing the Frontier of AI in India" is being held on February 17, 2026, in Delhi. The Union Minister of Education and the Minister of State for Education & Skill Development & Entrepreneurship are attending.
A panel of experts from different backgrounds has been invited to speak. These include leaders from IITs, major companies, and the investment sector. The session will be led by a professor from IIT Jammu.
The session will focus on how new technology, government policy, and industry support are coming together to change how students learn in India. The aim is to use AI not just in small projects but to make it a key part of the education system for everyone.
The government wants to build strong partnerships between schools, universities, startups, and companies. It has formed task forces, improved teacher training, and is including AI in the curriculum. The Ministry is also following the National Education Policy 2020 and the national goals of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Some of the steps the Ministry has taken over the last ten years include:- Building national digital platforms for learning- Making new rules for using AI in education- Reforming institutions- Training teachers and students on a large scale
This session is part of a bigger plan to help India use AI in education at every level. It highlights how policy, schools, and technology are working together for a better future.
The first batch of this diploma will start on September 7, 2026. While registration for this programme is underway, the last date to apply is May 31. Interested candidates can apply at code.iitm.ac.in/pgdma.
Eligibility includes candidates holding three-year or four-year undergraduate degrees in relevant disciplines, including BSc Computer Science and Computer Applications, subject to IIT Madras admission criteria.
The diploma is targeted at working professionals from large-scale and medium-scale manufacturing organisations, as well as eligible graduates who are seeking to build advanced capabilities in manufacturing analytics. The program will be delivered through web-enabled format designed to support diverse learner needs.
Highlighting the need for such programmes, Professor V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, added, “As India’s manufacturing sector accelerates its digital transformation, there is a clear need for programmes that combine academic depth with industry relevance. This postgraduate diploma reflects IIT Madras’ commitment to creating future-ready professionals who can lead technology-driven transformation in manufacturing.”
